Public Adjuster

Definition

A licensed claims professional who works exclusively for policyholders — not insurance companies. Public adjusters investigate claims, prepare damage estimates, negotiate with the insurer, and advocate for the highest legitimate settlement. They are paid a percentage of the claim settlement, typically 10-15%. They are licensed and regulated by state insurance departments.

When This Matters

After your insurer offers $45,000 for fire damage you believe exceeds $80,000, you hire a public adjuster who re-documents the loss and negotiates a $72,000 settlement.
