Adjuster

Definition

A professional who investigates insurance claims and determines the amount the insurer should pay. There are three types: company adjusters (employed by the insurer), independent adjusters (hired by insurers on contract), and public adjusters (hired by policyholders to represent their interests). Understanding which type you are dealing with is critical during the claims process.

When This Matters

After a water damage claim, the insurer sends a company adjuster to inspect your home. If you disagree with their assessment, you may hire a public adjuster to represent your interests.
