Definition
Legal responsibility for injury or damage caused to another person or their property. In insurance, liability coverage pays for damages you are legally obligated to pay to others, including legal defense costs. Liability coverage appears in homeowners, auto, umbrella, and commercial policies.
When This Matters
Your dog bites a neighbor. Your homeowners liability coverage pays their medical bills and your legal defense costs if they file a lawsuit.
