Non-Renewal

Definition

The insurer's decision not to renew your policy at the end of the current policy period. Non-renewal is different from cancellation — your policy stays in force until the end of the period, then the insurer declines to offer a new one. Insurers must provide advance notice of non-renewal, typically 30-60 days, depending on your state. Receiving a non-renewal notice does not mean you are uninsurable.

When This Matters

After filing two claims in two years, your insurer sends a non-renewal notice 45 days before your policy expires. You have time to shop for coverage with another carrier.
