Loss of Use

Definition

Coverage that pays expenses you incur when you cannot use your home due to a covered loss. On a homeowners policy, this is Coverage D. It covers the difference between your normal living expenses and the increased costs of living elsewhere during repairs. On a commercial policy, it is related to business interruption coverage.

When This Matters

A kitchen fire makes your home uninhabitable for two months. Loss of use coverage pays for your hotel, meals, and other living expenses above your normal budget.
