Certificate of Insurance (COI)

Definition

A document issued by an insurance company or broker that verifies the existence of an insurance policy, its coverage types, limits, and effective dates. COIs are commonly required in business contracts, leases, and construction projects. They do not modify the underlying policy.

When This Matters

A general contractor requires all subcontractors to provide certificates of insurance showing they carry workers compensation and general liability coverage before starting work.
